Schools must promote the protected characteristics of gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage & civil partnership, pregnancy & maternity, race and religion & belief.

At Morton Trentside, these values are reinforced regularly through assemblies, Picture News and discussions. Each class has an age-appropriate poster of the nine protected characteristics displayed to remind our children and stimulate conversation (see below).

Each Tuesday, each year group has a class assembly using Picture News. This uses a picture from the news as a stimulus to talk about current issues affecting our children (such as global warming, gender inequality and influencers) at an age-appropriate level. Questions, prompts and discussion points are presented in a child-friendly way and our pupils enjoy learning about the news and world around them. Each week, the news item is linked to British Values and one of the protected characteristics, meaning that our pupils are becoming increasingly aware of these important rights.
