We place reading at the heart of our curriculum so that when our children leave Morton Trentside Primary School, they become lifelong readers. Our aim is to develop children who read fluently and widely and are able to express preferences and opinions about the texts that they read. We want them to read for pleasure, having had access to a wide range of text types, genres and authors in order for them to make informed opinions about their favourites.

Through our Talk 4 Writing approach to writing, we aim for our children to value the ability to write well and understand the effect it has on not only their lives while at school, but beyond. Our ambition is to grow children who write with confidence and accuracy for a variety of purposes and audiences whilst developing their own individual flair. We want our children to be able to write with grammatical accuracy and be able to apply spelling patterns correctly using a neat handwriting style.  We aim to equip our children with a wide range of relevant and useful vocabulary so that they are able to use them not only to enhance their writing, but also to decipher new words and use them when speaking both informally and formally.

We provide many opportunities to apply all of these English skills to every area of the curriculum. Ultimately, we want to develop children who enjoy English and are able to use reading to gain knowledge and apply this to speaking and writing in order to effectively communicate.
